Team members – I Have to Be Nice to Them, Too?
Walkie-Talkie strapped on and here we go…I’m walkin’ and talkin’ out onto the retail floor.
“H2 (that’s a fancy boss name) this is Theresa checking in – where would you like me tonight?”
“Dodge, I don’t have you on the schedule tonight.” (Yes, one of my H2’s calls me Dodge. I love that. Most know me by Dodge, Dodgey, TD or Terri)
“I’m not scheduled? Hmmm. Okay, outta here. Like the wind.”
Fantastic! I had a 3 hour tennis match earlier in the day and my dogs are barking. Better said, my dogs are howling? For those of you not in the know – it means they hurt, they’re sore…not that they smell…although they are ‘stinkin’ sore tonight.
I punched out 3 minutes after I punched in. Let me see, that breaks down to approximately 10 cents added to my next paycheck – do I dare dream on what I am going to do with all that extra income?
Before heading for home I stopped to talk to a few of my team members in the breakroom. I’m definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and on this particular day, I’m sure there is one particular team member who is not thrilled to have me hanging around chit-chatting while he/she is on a peaceful 15-minute break.
Really? Like I’m too loud or something? My voice just carries more than other employees. I project when I speak and my words are just clearer and seem louder…who am I kidding I really can be a loud ass. It’s one of those things that I really try to improve on – not being a better loud ass…I mean to improve on being a quieter, more subtle one. That type.
Well, boo-hoo to my fellow team member. In life, there will always be people who don’t like you. That’s a fact, especially when there are so many different personalities on a team. My philosophy is to surround yourself with people who feel like sunshine. Don’t waste your time with ‘old grumpy heads’. But if you work with a few ‘old grumpy heads’ there is no way to get around it and it’s kinda a rule you have to be nice to them or least try not to be an ‘old grumpy head’ back.
Sometimes it can be very tough. One of the old grumpy heads put my name in bold letters and taped a big love note on a can of pop I left behind on a break room table. It said – Theresa, Pick Up Your Own Mess
My first thought – Are you kidding me? Get a life? One pop can left on a table is not considered a mess in my book. Even two pop cans are not considered a mess. Three pop cans left on a breakroom table – that might be grounds for getting fired.
Really? Come on. I’m pretty sure I know which old grumpy head left the love note for me.
The thing is – I really don’t like my pop cold and both refrigerators in the breakroom are stuffed full of food, leftover snacks and half cans/bottles of pop from who knows when. So why can’t I leave my half-empty pop can on a table? If I forget to pick the cans up once and awhile. (twice now) Does that make me a bad person? A slob? Inconsiderate?
What I really wanted to say – Next time don’t be a mean old grumpy head coward. Let’s be direct – we are all grown-ups here and if you are a super neurotic neat knick I don’t want to see you suffer looking at a half-empty pop can while you are trying to relax on your break…I will gladly try to remember to hide it next time.
But in my most professional retail employee manner, I left a love note back Instead and made sure it was taped inside the scheduling binder for everyone to see. It simply read – Thanks for the reminder to pick up my pop cans. I’m so sorry it upset you. Theresa
Like most people, I get upset and sometimes it’s over silly stuff. Isn’t it better to take the high road in life and not dwell on the negative? Personally, when I deal with negative people I always flip it to try and be more understanding, more empathic…you never know what is going on in someone’s life to make them miserable. Don’t ever let anyone else ruin your day – you definitely have that choice.
Thank you so much for reading. (especially since you made it all the way down here to the end) Please subscribe, share and most importantly leave a comment if you enjoyed this post.
