#10 This Side Hustle Thing – Not Working Out.
July 24, 2019
This whole side hustle – work retail part-time thing is not working out exactly as planned.
Why? Clearance. Clearance is the problem. And being the first to see something marked down 50% is even more of a problem. Or just knowing that the 50% markdown is going down to 90% – that is a huge problem for retail workers. I mean professional retail employees.
There is no way to avoid it. If I’m working on the floor, basically picking up clothes off the floor, the clearance tags are staring me in the face. If clearance tags could talk it would go something like this…
“Buy me, buy me now. Put me in your cubby so no other customers will get me first. I want to be with you. You’ll lose the weight and I’ll fit next month. You haven’t spent that much this week. Don’t miss out.”
On a register shift, it goes something like this.
“Hi, my name is Theresa. I’ll be cashing you out. Did you find everything you were looking for? OMG! Where did you find these? Are there any left? How many? Wow, you got some great deals.”
Then the customer walks away and I turn to the employee working the register next to me.
“I have to make a quick bathroom run so I’m gonna (yes..gonna) take my lunch break now.”
On my way to the clearance section, this crosses my mind…coupons? Do I have any? Yep – Whoop, Whoop…I’m a Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner. And I have my employee discount on top of that. Let’s be honest they are practically paying me to take this stuff home.
Uh Oh, there are three customers in the clearance section. I wipe away my bead of sweat as I approach the area.
My first thought – get out of my way people. I will fight you for this stuff.
What I say – in my most professional retail voice. “Excuse me, I have some stuff I need to take to the back. Just let me grab some of this stuff to mark it down again and I’ll bring it right back out.”
Okay, that’s a lie. If I said that I would be fired immediately. That is not professional and I get paid the big bucks to be professional and act with integrity. So instead, I rifle through a section nearby and give the customers my side-eye hoping they drop the items I so desperately need.
Pheww! They do. All is right in my professional retail employee world.
At the end of the day realization hits – what I spent during my lunch break is more than what I made for the day. It might be time to take on another part-time job (side hustle) to cover my part-time job in retail..which is supposed to cover my ongoing voiceover expenses.
In the end, I love my job, my team, and most of the customers. Hey, heads up, the holidays are around the corner and we’re hiring. I can’t say what store on my blog but email me for details. At this point no need to warn you about spending your entire paycheck, right?
Thank you so much for reading. (especially since you made it all the way down here to the end) Please subscribe, share, and most importantly – leave a comment if you enjoyed this post.
